Circle crop PNG guide: make a round profile picture

ImageCropper works as a free profile picture cropper. It cuts a perfect circle from your photo and saves it as a transparent PNG, ready for social profiles, team pages, chat apps and email signatures.

  1. Upload your photo by dragging it onto the cropper or clicking Choose Image.
  2. Click Circle Crop in the ratio bar. The crop box locks to 1:1.
  3. Drag the circle over the face and resize it from the corners. Zoom in for precise framing.
  4. Choose an avatar size (128–1024 px) and click Download Circle PNG.
  • Keep transparency: export PNG or WebP. JPG fills the corners with a solid color.
  • Upload square: most platforms display avatars as circles but store them as squares, so a transparent circle PNG looks clean everywhere.
  • Use enough resolution: 400–512 px suits most profiles. Pick 1024 px for high-DPI screens.
  • Center the eyes: place them near the upper rule-of-thirds line for a natural headshot.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop an image into a circle online?

Open ImageCropper, drop your photo into the upload zone, then click the Circle toggle in the aspect ratio bar. The crop box locks to a perfect circle; drag and resize it over your subject and click Download Circle PNG. The area outside the circle is fully transparent, which makes it ideal for profile pictures and avatars.

Can I crop images without losing quality?

Yes. ImageCropper copies the original pixels inside your crop box at full resolution. Choose PNG for a lossless result, or JPG/WebP at a high quality setting. Quality only drops if you choose a smaller output width or a low JPG/WebP quality.

Are my uploaded images saved on any server?

No. Your image never leaves your device. All cropping, rotation and circular masking happen inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API, so nothing is uploaded, stored or logged. The tool even keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

Why does my circle crop have a white background instead of transparency?

The JPG format does not support transparency, so the corners outside the circle are filled with the background color you choose. Export as PNG (or WebP) to keep the area outside the circle transparent.

How do I crop an image to 16:9 or 1:1?

Click the 16:9 or Square 1:1 preset above the canvas. The crop box snaps to that exact ratio and keeps it while you resize, so your result fits YouTube thumbnails, banners, Instagram posts or profile photos perfectly.

Can I rotate and flip a photo before cropping?

Yes. Use Rotate Left and Rotate Right to turn the image in 90 degree steps, Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical to mirror it, and the Straighten slider for fine rotation between -45 and 45 degrees to level a tilted horizon.

Which image formats does ImageCropper support?

You can open JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP images (plus GIF, BMP and AVIF where your browser supports them) and export the cropped result as PNG, JPG or WebP.

Does ImageCropper work on mobile phones?

Yes. The cropper is fully responsive and touch-friendly: drag the crop box with one finger, resize it with the handles and pinch to zoom on phones and tablets.

Is ImageCropper free to use?

ImageCropper is 100% free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limits on the number of images you crop.
